I don’t particularly need books on sales techniques. I mostly need books on personal psychology techniques. The individual I’m trying to help is the top salesperson in the company, but she gets discouraged much too easily whenever she has a period of time with few or no sales. She tends to allow that discouragement and pessimism to affect her performance, thus perpetuating the less successful period.

Apart from recommending books to customers, are there any other ways?

Telling them something about the book or what made you like it. I’ve worked in a major book store for over 12 years and I find that always helps. I make it a point never to tell someone I like a book when I really don’t. If they seem interested and I don’t like it but have heard other people rave about it I tell them that. Just be friendly and do everything you can to see they get the book that will make them happy. The person above that says to leave them alone has never worked at a bookstore or they would know that in most of them you HAVE to take the customer to the shelf and put the book in their hand or you WILL get fired. There are "secret shoppers" put out there to ask you questions to see if you really do put the book in their hands and if you don’t they write your name on a report and you get in major trouble. Bottom line just be friendly and helpful but not pushy. In a big chain store like mine it’s very hard to do this because you have no budget (because they aren’t happy with the 2 billion they make a year, they want 2.5 billion), and you have to put out the books, dust, sell stuff, put up displays, move shelving units and tables, take out returns, and a bunch of other stuff all while your answering 9 lines on a phone and trying to use the 2 or 3 computers on the desk because you have no help. It’s hard to give good customer service like that but you don’t have a choice so you do the best you can.

Specifically, I am trying to find information on a sales career in funeral or cemetery sales. I have done searches at Barnes & Noble, but so far, I cant find much detailed information on funeral sales. I think it would be really cool to find a book dedicated exclusively to discussing the different types of sales careers.
